Behind the scenes with Bryan Bowden

As I mentioned earlier, I was recently contacted by american fashion-photographer Bryan Bowden, to shoot a behind the scenes spot about him. The film is going to be shown at a site called Fstoppers, which goal is to provide inside looks on how professional photographers work. A great incentive indeed. This is from the first part of the shoot, located at the Icebar in Oslo, which provided some really awesome scenery for the shots. The models were both norwegian, probably why they handled the cold enviroment in there so well. It was absurd to be inside a giant freezer for a gig, my gear kept fogging up everytime I went in and out of there between shoots. Bryan’s shots was for the clothing-store Freudian Kicks. Second part will be shot at a studio in Oslo, in a week or so.

Some old, some news.
As of now, what keeps you guys from seeing the new Envy - Set To Go music video, directed, shot and edited by myself, are some sort of legal terms. I havent gotten around to understand it that well, but the video will be out within a few days tops. The guys at fivestar were superstoked when they first viewed the final cut, and I’m pretty excited myself. Feels good to be satisfied with a product you’ve been working on for so long. You can view it very soon, promise.
Anyways, some other stuff has come up along the way that have kept me kind of busy. Bryan Bowden, fashion photographer from NYC contacted me a week ago, wanting me to do a Behind the Scenes feature of him and his style of shooting. It will apparently be showcased at a site called Fstoppers. The site is kind of new and up-and-coming, but it has exploded over the past few months. Which means, alot of people will se my feature. Yay. I’ll be shooting the first part with Bryan at the IceBar in downtown Oslo this Wednesday. An awesome-looking location that will serve for some amazing shots, no doubt. I’ll keep ya’ll posted along the way.
In the meantime, enjoy these shots from my friend’s home/farm taken a few weeks back.

Always wanting more

Sometimes, I feel like all the cameras, lenses and assorted photo-accessories I have purchased over the years are playing tricks on me. Some of it, really high-end stuff, tend to feel outdated and “not good enough”. I keep wishing for that new camera-body, or that other lens to produce the images I want. Am I being held back by my own equipment?
Witnessing my friend Ole Martin testing out his new 5D MK2 today brought some feelings of envy and/or jealousy. But I’m only human. And we’ll always want more, no matter what. Deep down, I’m just happy for him. He works hard and deserves this camera to bring righteousness to his visual expressions. And to be honest, it’s an awesome piece of engineering, and I want one aswell. All in due time.
Truth is, gear doesn’t make you a good photographer. Anyone can take a nice picture with a Leica M9. What makes you good, is being able to create what you want, with what you have. Or maybe that’s just something broke photographers say. Either way, as of now, I’m happy with what I got. And I’m excited for what the next piece of equipment will end up in my camera bag the next time some good money comes my way. Maybe a 5D, maybe 40 rolls of film. Or just rent money.
The picture above is taken with a Canon EOS 20D, my previous workhorse. Love it.

Post Production

That’s what it looks like.

Set to go, last day
Finished off the last day of shooting with the boys Nico and Vinzy V recently. Now there’s only post-production left, which I will be taking care of as well during the next few weeks. I’m excited about the end result for sure. Below: Stills from the 7D video. In the meantime, be sure to support these heroes by purchasing their song at Platekompaniet or at your local iTunes Music Store. Also, check out www.fivestar.no

Some pictures from St. Pauli, Hamburg. Our second stop on our way to Rock am Ring. We decided to stay in Hamburg one more day, since we spent the first one driving around town desperately trying to find a place to stay. All hotels were booked because of the Eurovision song contest. Germany won the same evening we arrived in Hamburg, and the temperature was seemingly high down town, too bad we didn’t get a piece of the action. After a memorable night in St. Pauli, we got the hell out of there as fast as we could and headed towards Bremen.

Here are some shots from my recent roadtrip through Denmark and Germany. All pictures taken in Copenhagen. We passed a crazy dude on the street, I asked if I could take his picture, he told me I was crazy and started picking lilacs for me. It was a good day, we ate a hearty breakfast and went to the Tivoli to ride some crazy rides before heading for Hamburg.

Educate this:

A few months ago I applied for the Film and Television course at Westerdals School of Communication. It is an Oslo based higher educational school which offers some of the best programs within different medias. The process of applying included examination tests, interviews and a whole day working together with other applicants.
Anyway, I got the call a couple of days ago. Out of some hundred who applied, I was offered one of the 25 avalible places. I’m stoked for sure! It’s a three year course, so I’m really looking forward to see what will happen in the fall. Can’t wait to work with lots of talented people from different classes and programmes and learn much more than I have before. It feels really good to have some set plans for the future again.
Oh yeah, I accidentally managed to spill two slices of ‘za on my mac. That sucked.

Back from Rock am Ring

After ten days of traveling, partying, vomiting, rocking and nearly dying, we safely pulled the car up to the driveway a couple of days ago. It feels good to be home, the life on the road is a harsh one for sure. One can definitly go crazy from being locked inside a small metal can for hours on end. We met alot of good people, some not so good, and some just plain crazy. I have tons of stories, not all them child-friendly, but most of them good ones. I don’t have the energy to go into detail at the moment, but I’ll keep posting stuff from the trip later on. For now you can enjoy the photoset below, with a few select photos from the drive down to Nürburg, Germany. I’ll upload and update the picture of the day site soon enough.

Roadtrip!

As I mentioned earlier, I’m leaving Oslo tomorrow morning to go on a roadtrip with 3 good friends. Our final destination is the Rock am Ring festival in Nurburg, Germany. On our way down we’ll be stopping in Copenhagen, Bremen, Cologne and Hamburg to name a few. There is predicted much awesomeness for next week and a half, unfortunately I won’t be able to keep you guys updated, since I’ll be on the road and without internet for the entire trip. But I’ll post lots of stuff when we get back for sure. Wish me luck, see ya’ll in a week or so.

Keeping up consistency
As you may have noticed, on the side-menu-thing of this site, there is a page called 365. If you yet haven’t dared to click it, I suggest you grow a pair and do it right away.
I started a project about a month ago called 365. It’s not very original and tons of people have done it before me, but it seemed interesting enough to give it a go. It basicly means that I have to take one picture every single day for an entire year. Seems easy, though it actually is kind of a hassle. You think to yourself “pfff, that’s easy, all I gotta do is snap a shot once a day”. Hah! You’ll be intrigued how annyoing it is when it’s a quarter to twelve at night and you forgot to take a picture that day-So you run around the house trying to find a plant or some random motif that might look ok on-screen. Only to realize you’re fooling yourself by not trying hard enough. Or you simply didn’t carry your camera around that day.
The point of the entire thing is to be able to observe some kind of a learning-curve. Which is exciting enough, yet there’s still 11 months left of this project for me. As a personal thing, it’s fun to look back at old photos and see what I did that day, more fun for me than you I guess. But whatever. Patience is a virtue.
If you are at least half as interested as I am in observing the progress, click on the 365 link in the menu, and follow it on a regular basis.

This hydraulic lift sat in the middle of my street for a few days, messing up the traffic for everyone. Great entertainment for bystanders as myself. Picture taken may 19th, Canon EOS 7D, 50mm, f/1.8, ISO 100, s1/500.

Set to go, day 4
Back in Alex’s apartment to shoot Nico Sereba’s verse for the video “Set to Go” today. The shoot got off to a slow start, some of us were hungover, some just not in great shape. Me included in the latter. But when the nice light came through the windows, it was time to get going. There’s only one shooting day left before the entire video is shot. It’s going down by the start of next week.
Kind of not looking forward to spending weeks in the basement with post production while the sun is out. But when it’s all done, it’ll be worth it for sure.
Below: Stills from the 7D video.

Set to go, day 3
Called in to a meeting with some of the boys working on the “set to go” project today at my man Alex’s house in old Oslo, more precisely, Vålerenga. We still have some shots that need to be done before I travel to Germany at the and of the month(yeah, that’s right, I’m going to Germany on a roadtrip, more on that later). So we have to act fast. I’m still sure we’ll make it in time, no doubt.
As a spur-of-the-moment kind of thing, we soon realized that Alex’s apartment looked awesome, and that we were in fact sitting in an extremely cool-looking location. With little argument, we decided to shoot Vincent’s solo part in the video, right there on the spot. With the lights coming through the window, and the relaxed, yet stylish atmosphere made for some very nice pictures to go in the video. Vinz gave me some good rap-acting, wich will turn out great in the finished product.
Here are some stills from the shoot.

Next day of shooting will be happening this weekend.

Second time around
Went out to shoot some more stuff with Nikolai Torgersen today. Maybe it will end up in another segment like the one I made earlier, or we might try to film for something even longer. It wasn’t exactly first try fridays, more like many tries mondays. But some good skating went down until Niko busted his ankle. We’ll have to wait a few days for it to heal, but we got some good stuff that’ll probably end up in the video.
